About Below the Sill

Below the Sill is about what’s under your house: the crawl space, the basement, the foundation, and the water and moisture that travel through them. We write for homeowners in the United States who have noticed something, like a musty smell, a damp wall or a crack, and want to understand it before they call anyone or spend money.

We answer your question as directly as possible, then explain what might change the answer. We use diagrams to help explain things. When we give prices, we say where they came from and what year they’re from. If we think you need a professional, we’ll tell you.

Who runs Below the Sill

Below the Sill is run by Estefanía André Feijóo, a graphic designer, content editor and digital marketer who lives in Spain. She was asked to build the website by her relative Robert Stulpt and his colleague Daniel Mercer. She designs the website, edits and publishes our guides, and runs the site. The technical knowledge in the guides comes from Robert and Daniel.

Who writes and reviews our guides

Our guides are written by Robert Stulpt. Robert is a licensed contractor in Virginia who specializes in moisture, water and mold issues. He holds five IICRC certifications in moisture inspection, water damage restoration, structural drying and mold remediation.

Daniel Mercer reviews the structural information in our guides. Daniel has a degree in civil engineering and has spent more than 17 years evaluating existing homes and working on structural repairs in Virginia.

How the site is funded

As of right now, Robert Stulpt and Daniel Mercer pay for Below the Sill with income from their own work. We hope to add display ads later. We do not sell leads or take referral fees, and we will not be paid to write about or recommend any product or company. We don’t promote Robert’s or Daniel’s businesses or send them customers.

About our experts and contributors

Below the Sill is an independent educational website. We publish practical information to help homeowners better understand basements, crawl spaces, foundations, moisture, drainage and related home issues.

Our contributors and reviewers participate in an editorial capacity only. Below the Sill does not provide inspections, engineering services, repair services, contractor referrals or project estimates, and we do not accept requests for residential repair work through this website.

Any examples, cost ranges or repair approaches discussed on the site are provided for general educational purposes. They are not a substitute for an on-site assessment by a qualified professional who can evaluate the specific conditions of a home.

When a project involves structural changes, permits, safety concerns or conditions outside a homeowner’s expertise, we recommend consulting the appropriate licensed professional in the property’s jurisdiction.
